    On April 10, 1861, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was granted its official charter by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. By 1865, MIT's first classes were held in the Mercantile Building in Boston. In 1866, the university's first building came into existence in Boston's Back Bay. In June 1916, MIT moved to its current location in Cambridge

    The School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences along with the MIT Sloan School of Management were established in the year 1950. While 1994 saw, Tim Berners-Lee take control of the institute's Laboratory for Computer Science to establish the World Wide Web Consortium.
