Hi,
As the medium of education in abroad universities is english, so all the international students whose first or native language is not english have to take either TOEFL or IELTS test to prove their english language proficiency.
Most of the universities abroad have 2 admission intakes in a year namely:
Fall(August) intake.
Spring(January) intake.
So it is always advisable to take this test atleast 7-8 months in advance of your planned admission intake.
Feel free to discuss more.

Good Luck.

It is not an overnight preparation.IELTS AND TOEFL are necessary according to the country to which you propose to go and both may not be necessary. Take up one of the two.
