<p>One might think that being a fresher would be a disadvantage for a candidate appearing for UPSC exam. However in every batch there are officers who have cleared the exam in the very first attempt, even the toppers are sometimes come from this list of first timers. It's therefore important to see what they have done right with respect to the exam. In my observation some of the common factors emerge if we see at all those selections. Even though there is no readymade recipe for any fresher to clear civil service in his or her first attempt and I believe that every successful candidate has his or her unique story which can only be understood but it can't be replicated to get similar success, we can learn from the common things which they have done right.</p><p>Being a fresher, the first and foremost important task is to clear prelims. Prelims is the most difficult stage to clear in my opinion. Even if some might find it's easier because of its objective nature, one should not forget the level of competition and margin of error available during prelims. So without taking it lightly, a fresher must focus with all the energy to clear the prelims first. If a fresher has cleared the prelims in very first attempt, it would definitely the level of confidence which is very much required in later stages.</p><p>Being a fresher, you can't do things which require lot of time and patience to master. Smart work is the key here. Just focus on your strength and try to master it with rest being average, the probability of coming out with more than average score inMainsis higher.</p><p>I would emphasize more on the answer writing practice, just go for writing and writing whenever you find time. Even at the cost of acquiring less information, try to write down the same piece of information in different answer formats in time bound manner. One of the major disadvantage of pressure might be having compared to repeater is the experience of ofMainsexam writing. You have to compensate it by writing practice in exam like situation only as there is no other easy way.</p><p>While writing the answers, try to be original and express yourself in unique way instead of focusing on lot of information. The strength of fresher is not the information but a fresh new and original way of thinking, that's the only way you can outsmart others. Not to say that information is not required but being a fresher you have to use whatever information you have in right way.</p><p>Interview is the only stage in UPSC exam which I think is better suited to fresher and a fresher has advantage. Just be yourself.</p><p>During the entire process of preparation, try to find out a mentor who is the successful civil service candidate. If it's difficult in person then at least try to be in touch with such people.</p>
