How is the XAT score and percentile calculated?

To calculate your final XAT percentile, you need to follow the given steps: 1) Add the total sum of all percentile of different areas like VA, DM and Quantitative Ability. 2) This sum is to be divided by the aggregate number 245. 3) To calculate the final percentage, the number is to be multiplied by 100. Although by 31st Jan, the final score card will be out. There might be no or little change in your tentative and final result. These are according to the new regulations introduced for the admissions in 2019.

XAT has been a difficult paper and even the toppers could typically attempt less than half of the 90-100 question in 120 minutes allocated for the aptitude paper. To ensure that students are able to attempt a larger number of questions XAT, over the last few years, reduced the number of questions, reduced the level of difficulty of QADI and increased the time for the paper from 120 to 170 minutes. As per the latest official release, XAT 2017 is a 210 minute paper with 170 minutes for 72 questions of Part I (Aptitude portion) and 35 minutes for Part II which consists of 25 GK questions and the Essay. While it has not been explicitly stated but the remaining 5 minutes would be for the changeover from Part I to Part II. The breakup of the 72 questions of Part I is: Section A: 24 questions, this is most probably Verbal & Logical Ability. Section B: 21 questions, this is most probably the Decision-Making section. Section C: 27 questions, this is most probably the QADI section. In XAT 2017, candidates leaving up to 12 questions unattempted will not be penalized but unattempted questions beyond 12 will carry the negative mark of 0.05. Thus if you attempt 49 questions in Part I and do not attempt 23 questions then the negative marking for unattempted questions will be (23-12) x 0.05 = 0.55 marks. These -0.55 marks will be divided among the three sections in proportion to the number of unattempted questions which would lead to a reduction of approximately -0.2 marks in each section. Impact of penalty for unattempted questions: XAT believes that this introduction of negative marking for unattempted questions will encourage students to take risks and not play safe. I disagree with this assessment of XAT because the penalty for unattempted questions is very low.

Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) is an important exam. As there are many confusions in percentage and percentile. So, percentage is a ratio expressed as a fraction of 100, whereas, percentile is dependent on the highest marks. It is a measure used in statistics indicating the value below which a given percentage of observations of candidates fall. Percentile formula is same for all exams. Talking about how the XAT exam percentile is calculated So, assuming that 30000 people appeared for XAT exam in a particular year. The net score of everyone is calculated, and all test-takers are sorted in descending order of their marks in XAT. Assuming your rank is 500. So, in this case, your percentile score will be: Total No. of Candidates-your rank Therefore 30000-500=29500 (29500/30000)x100=98.33 percentile. So, like this, the percentile of XAT exam and similar exams can be calculated.

Just like any percentile score is calculated, a percentile represents the rank of a candidate in an examination, relative to the rest of the candidates who appeared for the same examination in the same time-frame. If you ranked 1st, then there are 9 students behind you or 90% of the test-takers are ranked after you. XAT 2017 paper pattern was exactly as announced. No surprises there! As usual, it was administered in two parts. The first part consisted of Verbal & Logical Ability, Decision Making, and Quantitative Ability & DI. Only the first part is taken towards the calculation of percentile. This percentile is used for shortlisting by all institutes that take the XAT. The second part had the general knowledge section (no negative marks) and an essay section which is used mainly by XLRI at the time of the interview and final selection. Hope this information helps

XAT 2017 paper had two parts. The first part of the paper consists of three sections namely Decision making, Verbal ability and Logical Ability, Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation. This section has time duration of 170 mins. The second part of the paper consists of essay writing and questions testing your general awareness. This section has time duration of 35 minutes. The total time duration is 205 mins. There is a negative marking of 1/4th of the marks allotted for every question you attempt incorrectly. Candidates have an option of not attempting 12 questions after which for every unattempted question 0.05 mark is deducted. The percentile calculation is same as every other exam like CAT. Since it is a single slot exam there is no normalization. Usually, the maximum score in XAT is not on a very higher side.
