Indian IT industries are now preferring BTech CSE/ IT/ Electronics/ ECE for software jobs. This trend is likely to become stronger in days to come. You are advised to study well and excel in your branch i.e. Mechanical Engineering. It is suggested that you do not study and prepare for one company placement at the start of your engineering degree education.

Mechanical has very good scope . In India if you're from mechanical engineering then you have also very good option for government jobs. So don't worry about placements. Focus on your subjects and do as much as possible hard work in your academics. But if you're interested in TCS then learn C programming and prepare aptitude. And also prepare a bit for group discussion activity.
All the best.
