If I score above 99 percentile in CAT, can I get admission in any of the top 20 B-Schools?

May not be a surety for IIMS, but yes definable for one of the top Schools apart from the score you get in this travesty of an entrance exam, which is called CAT. There are many other factors which decide your call. Other answers here have given their personal experiences. I will go by arithmetic method here. I assume that the intake for each IIM is around 200. So IIMS A, B and C will have 600 seats to offer. I also assume that the call getters: call converters ratio is 5:1, which means for every 5 people who get calls, there is 1 person who would convert it. Thus, IIMS A, B and C together call the first 3000 people ranked. Thus, the cut-off percentile would be 98.5. Now, half the seats are reserved. So general category (open competition) has got 300 seats. Now assuming a 1500: 300 ratio, the cut off for general category would be 99.25 %. Thus, even a 99 percentile would probably not get that coveted call. Even if you belong to any reserved category, the cut-offs would still be closer to 96%. Don't believe the ridiculously low-cut offs (in the order of 75 %) that is given in their websites. I have seen many reserved category who score 95% and above, and still go without a call.

Yes, definitely, 99 percentile in CAT is the big thing. You will definitely get among top B Schools of the county.
