You can start your own preparation and try to understand the problems. You can also take coaching for CAT exam. You can solve previous year question papers.

The coaching is not mandatory to crack CAT exam, but it will definitely help you to be on the right track. You can consider TIME for coaching and Arun Sharma's book are quite popular.
For strengthening GK, you should read newspapers regularly. For improving your vocabulary, you can go through the editorial columns as it will help you for the interview rounds after CAT.

If you want to join any coaching class, then it's very good option. It will help you to enhance your interpersonal skills and communication skills. If you want to do self-study, then you can choose the books like 5th Edition (Paperback) by Arun Sharma, Publisher: Tata McGraw Hill 2012, 1st Edition (Paperback) by Nishit K Sinha. Publisher: Pearson, CBSE books for Class 8th, 9th, 10th, etc.

It depends upon your intelligence. For cracking CAT exam coaching is somewhat necessary. But, self-practicing is very important. There are some books which makes it somewhat easy to crack CAT exam. Self-training, dedicated practice is very important. Arun Sharma's CAT quantitative aptitude and logical reasoning books are best in my opinion. -
