Sir I want to do MBA in IIM but I am a 2 year dropout after 12th. Can I get admission in IIM.

Hi, It would not matter when the institutes are shortlisting candidates (the shortlists are mostly a function of your academic record, professional performance and your CAT score). However, the b-school interview panelists (and also the recruiters when it comes to on campus placements) would be curious to know the reason behind the gap. If the rest of your CV is fine and you are a solid candidate (on the basis of content and communication), you should not have any problem getting through as well. Generally, people take gaps after their high school to look for better career opportunities or if there is a compelling personal reason (personal illness, financial reasons, familiar setbacks, etc.). That would force them to wait for a year or two. My personal take on this matter is to talk about the positives gained during this phase instead of dwelling on how bad the whole situation was. A panel would interview around 20 - 30 candidates in a day and considering the routine conversion rates, we are looking at 5 - 10 candidates getting the nod on an average day. If a significant portion of your interview deals with the negative aspects of the gap, you will find it extremely difficult to break into the top 5 for the day. So, talk about something you did during the gap that helped you later, talk about how you became better at decision making and taking advice from people, talk about a similar situation sometime later in your life that you handled well owing to your previous experience and showcase your qualities of being focused, analytical and adaptive. Simply mentioning an illness or that there was a personal reason behind the act will lead to either an awkward silence followed by random questioning or further prodding till you give away a weakness. It helps being descriptive in this context and you can actually use it to your advantage. Hope that helps. All the best.
