The syllabus of TOEFL has four sections:
Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing.
1. Reading measures the ability to understand academic reading matter.
2. Listening measures the ability to understand English as it is used in colleges and universities.
3. Speaking measures the ability to speak English.
4. Writing measures the ability to write in a way that is appropriate for college and university course work.

The TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test) is designed to evaluates four key language skills: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. The syllabus of TOEFL exam for all 4 sections can be checked below.
Section Duration Tasks Reading 35 mins 2 passages (700 words each), 10 questions per passage Listening 36 mins 3 lectures (6 questions each), 2 conversations (5 questions each) Speaking 16 mins 4 tasks: 1 independent, 3 integrated (based on reading and listening) Writing 29 mins 2 tasks: 1 integrated (20 mins), 1 academic discussion (10 mins)

In TOEFL 2026, the computer monitors your answers in Module 1. If you do well, Module 2 becomes harder to help you get a higher band score. This multistage adaptive system replaces the fixed-length sections used in 2025.
TOEFL 2025 exam duration was about 2 hours. In the 2026 update the total time is cut to around 90 minutes. This is because the Reading and Listening sections are now adaptive, making the test faster and more personalized.
