Established in 2000, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) is a state government university. AKTU is a University of National Importance, specially for the UG and PG courses offered in the field of Engineering and Science. AKTU is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU), formerly known as Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU), has 49 affiliated colleges and 785 institutes under its name that offer a total of 25 UG, PG and PhD programmes across numerous specialisations and streams.

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam technical University is formerly known as Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU). This is because, the university was initially named after the state but renamed in 2015 to honor the former Indian president, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
