UVM was first referred to as the Public Ivy by Richard Moll in his book: The Public Ivies: A Guide to America's Best Public Undergraduate Colleges & Universities, which was published in 1985.
The institute is called a “public ivy” because of its world class educational programs & overall quality of education.
Though, it must be noted that the term “public ivy” does not mean an equivalence to Ivy League Universities.
