Are computer science and software engineering two different branches?

They are not same but people don't differentiate much as these degree holders generally end up competing for the same jobs. Curriculum wise Computer science is more theoretical and less structured and so allows students the flexibility in coding and developing algorithms. It concentrates more on fundamentals. Software engineering is more applied and concentrates on processes of software development from idea to final implementation.

The focus of computer scientists is on learning the fundamentals of their profession, whereas the focus of computer engineers is on creating new hardware. Computer Engineering was once (and by some accounts still is) seen as a subfield of Electrical Engineering, whereas Computer Science developed out of the mathematical field of computation. Students majoring in computer Science study topics including data security, algorithm design, and network protocols.
