Are distance education schools fake or real?

Not every distance college is registered under DDE/UGC. Some colleges give away degrees, but not certified from Indian Education Boards which will not be valid at any walk of life. Yes many distance universities in India are real and working over decades in India. These universities distance degree are valid throughout the world. Before selecting your future college for distance it is always good to do some research about it. That will help you decide the best and right one for your career building.
