Are Medicine and Engineering Overhyped as Career Options?
Immediately after 12th standard or even before that students are preparing for medical or engineering entrance. It could be peer pressure or from the parents, medicine and engineering have become celebrity careers. Despite so many other creative fields around students are thinking of only these two ... Medicine and Engineering are the most competitive career options, in my opinion students should always choose a career which interest them the most, they should simply do not opt for a career path just because it is one of the highest paid profession.

Thanks for inviting Aneeket. i agree with Dr Goutam Chatterjee. let me share one thing here. Due to continuous mushrooming of TEIs some state governments have written to AICTE for ceasing approval. We must revert to the old culture of classroom studies. Parental Counselling is important in the sense that most of the parents fail to understand their wards. They try to impose their own ideals. They must observe the interests of their wards. On an average there are at least 85 engineering colleges in each state. Haryana has 147 engineering colleges. This mushrooming of TEIs has led to an inflation of skills in our country as these so-called institutes are there in the market only for making money; they don't bother whether a student is learning the basics of engineering or not. Recently I was conducting Viva-Voce in one of the most reputed TEIs of North India and I was surprised to observe that the final year students didn't know the basics like Bevel Gear, USB, Clutch Plate etc. If we don't take appropriate steps to check this, I am sorry, the future will be in doldrums.

I do agree that these two fields are over hyped but the fact of the matter is the biggest number of jobs are available in these two fields in spite of booming tourism, hotels, media, retail sector, marketing, call centers, BPOs etc. Irony is that 75% of engineering pass outs are not suitable to work in their domain field, 60% students are coming from lower middle class, farmers and class-III employee's house and due to this over hype, people don't understand that children need to find other avenues as well. Surprisingly, higher middle class is exactly doing that and that is why their children are going for modelling, entrepreneurship etc. Mushrooming engineering, MBA, media, computer application and animation institutes are further fueling that such courses would bring lucrative jobs. There is a need for rationalization of thoughts among all the stake holders that we have to encourage good old habit of hard working-class room studies for development of identity in the chosen field of studies. Counseling of parents is more important, compared to the children. Let them understand that if your child is good in studies and laborious without coercion then definitely let him/her go to engineering or medicine but otherwise it is wise enough to allow them to choose what they want. This way probably, old dignity of an engineer may return.

Well Yes these 2 field are over hyped specially because of parents forcing their child either to become an engineer or to be a doctor! In this dilemma of choosing among the 2 fields, the parents are overlooking their child's interest. Ase arlier stated by our experts,Since from last 10 years, adverse of increasing industrialisation and globalization in indian market results in greater demand in science and technology.and also direct impact on education industries.and even indians generally likes what the neiboures and relatives likes.they find and give most of the preferences to peers, colleagues and relatives tastes.yes obviously this is one of the kind of reason for overhyping these sectors.by continuing this, results greater demand over a period of time.

Yes these two professions are overhyped--partly because of their unquestionable direct utility to the society, and partly due to the immediate monetary returns they give.BUT, is everyone who qualifies for these courses comes out in flying colours in the applied aspects of his or her professional life? NO, because not everyone has the ability or the aptitude to put theory into the expected standards of application. This fact is discovered by the students by the time they are in the final year of their courses. But by that time there is no turning back. So, there has to be a system whereby the real aptitude should be visible to the studen

So, there has to be a system whereby the real aptitude should be visible to the students as early as their seond year in the professional institution, so that they start themselves preparing for an auxiliary course. For example, in B.Sc.(Animation & Multimedia) 3-year course , they give you an option to get Certificate after first year, Diploma after the 2nd year, or a full-fledged degree after the final 3rd year. The same set of possibilities must be there in the medical or engineering courses.

Well.both these professions are well-paid and offer you a skill in hand that has a long-term utility. There are only few options that can stand up to them on both these points, until you are exceptionally gifted. Average doctors and engineers earn better than best teachers and above average dancers.
