Are Sikkim Manipal University and Manipal University different from each other?

Sikkim Manipal University is one of the institutes of Manipal University authorised to impart education in Distance mode. The Sikkim Manipal University was established in 1995 and is the first government-private initiative in the region offering quality education to students from the north and north-eastern parts of the country. SMU is recognised by the University Grants Commission and approved by the Government of India. The university was established in accordance with the Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences Act, 1995 (Act No. 9 of 1995); with the aim of imparting exemplary educational opportunities and healthcare services in the State of Sikkim and country wide. It is the first of its kind in the country with a collaboration of private and public sector.
