Are some NITs better than IITs if they have been ranked higher?

No, actually, the real reason why they are upper in rank is that the total number of research papers published, number of placements, number of GRE and GMAT qualifiers and many other factors form that ranking.

I myself did the same mistake as you mentioned
I was getting IIT-Dhanbad, but refused to go there because i wanted to study within my home state that is Delhi.
So, I took up admission in DTU.
