  • The chances of becoming General after becoming a CDS officer is very less as in duration of service in the Defence forces play a vital role in getting promotions. The candidates commissioned as officers after NDA serves for more duration in the Army as compared to CDS. Therfore, the chances of becoming General after NDA is slightly higher. Historically all the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) is an NDA alumni. The current General of India General Manoj Pande is from NDA.

  • No, a CDS officer typically wouldn't become a General because a CDS officer is a distinguished officer from any of the three services who has already reached a high rank before being appointed to the CDS position and the CDS position has a fixed tenure, typically two years.
