Can an average student manage to do CPL?

If you can score 50% with PCM in Class 12, then you can very much do CPL.
DGCA has already kept the minimum eligibility norms very relaxed. It is only 50% marks, but it should be with PCM.
Although, nothing that you have studied till class 12th directly helps with the pilot training, but the general perception is developed in such a manner that you can align your thought process to that required for the aviation studies.
So, I feel you can, if you satisfy the minimum eligibility. -
