No, the decision to remove branch change was made for undergraduates from the 2024–25 academic session at IIT Kharagpur. It was decided to help reduce the pressure and extra competition related to the tiny number of branch change opportunities, as less than 10% of applicants could use this option. Rather than having students change from one branch to another, the institute now provides a 'Double Major' programme that lets students study a different subject as well. Anyone wishing to double major must maintain a CGPA of 7.0 and have no pending subjects by the end of their second semester.
