Can I join merchant navy by doing mechanical engineering from any college or do I need to specifically go for merchant navy?

Mechanical Engineering graduates can undergo 1 year duration Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) course to enter into merchant navy as Marine engineer. This course is offered by lot of institutes approved by the Directorate General of Shipping.
