    First of all relax. Many of the students who choose their branch have no idea on what field to take. Many will be under force by relatives to choose the field they prefer, please don't listen to those people, yes, you may first choose the field of their choice. In the first year, the basics of all the subjects and prerequisites for every field will be taught then by the beginning of the second year you get the choice to choose the field of your choice yes there is an option in VTU, you can change your branch to whichever field you prefer to do your engineering in.
