Can M.Phil only be done in the same subject as ones PG? I am a Bach of design looking to do MA in education. What subject can my M.Phil be ?

I am fashion designer ( from NIFT) working as assistant professor in private design colleges and would like to pursue either M.Phil or Ph.D in design or design education in the future. Will it help if I do my post graduation in MA education? Is NET/SET required to do M.Phil or PHD. Please help
