CAN WE WRITE BOTH CAT AND MAT IN A SINGLE YEAR?

Asi have heard that cat exams are highly competitive.i want to have another entrance exam as backing.so which other entrance entrance exam is easier? i have heard that mat is quite easier than cat..Is the syllabus same for both exams? can we write both the exams in the same year??
