If you are a Diploma student, then you have to do 3 years Diploma course, and then get into engineering. Since 3rd year Diploma is considered as 1st year of B.Tech, and you have to admit directly into 2nd year of B.Tech. Getting into 2nd year of B.Tech is called lateral entry.

A lateral entry student is one who directly enters into second year of engineering. He/she must have completed a Diploma in their respective branch to be eligible for the lateral entry programme. After completing Diploma they write a special examination for enrollment in the institute of their interest.

Through B.Tech lateral entry, you can take admission on direct 2nd year on any of private or government colleges except IIT & NIT. But, eligibility is to pass 3 year Diploma or B.Sc.
