In my opinion, you can go to any of your branch related courses so that you can save some time after your B.Tech. If you aim at civil services, you can go for coaching and you can start your GATE preparation from Second semester onwards.

Do your every subject thoroughly, especially mathematics. If you are interested in GATE exam, then check which subject is important for your GATE preparation and do it really well side wise itself. So, you don't have to drop your year for GATE and be able to crack it in its first attempt.
