<p>The establishment of Heidelberg University in 1386 makes it Germany's first university and today represents one of Europe's foremost research powerhouses. The educational institution known as Heidelberg University operates from its base in Baden-Württemberg under twelve departments concentrating on medicine law natural sciences humanities and social sciences. The university caters for 29,000 students from which 20% hail from international students released from over 130 countries.</p><p>The German Excellence Initiative selected Heidelberg as one of its research centers with a special focus on bioscience and cultural research areas. The university works in partnership with 400 international universities through which it has established connections with 56 Nobel Prize winners.</p><p>Foreign students from outside the EU need to pay €1,500 per semester for their education but EU students only need to handle €150–€200 in administrative expenses during the semesters.
