Before I left for UK to do MBA years, I studied some basic courses in Germand and Russian. When I went to UK, I found that there are plenty of job opportunities for people with high fluency in both English and foreign languages like French, German, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, Italian etc. Both employers were finding it very difficult to find candidates who have a high level of fluency in two or three European languages. It does not matter what part of the world you come from. Not to mention the high pay (atleast by British standards) to go alongwith it. Thanks for tagging, Aneeket! Well I agree with what Dr Chatterjee and Mr Joshi have said. As a researcher of Linguistics, I believe knowing multiple languages does always give you an edge over others. The process of globalisation has necessitated this to a great and considerable extent. Let alone the case of career and profession, it places you in a position to interact with more number of people and helps you socialise even in unfamiliar condition. For instance, I speak almost all Indian languages and Spanish. I am never uncomfortable while traveling or visiting a place which doesn't have MY PEOPLE. Even while teaching I don't let any

It may not be everyone's cup of tea though it may lend an extra edge to everyone equipped. As others have already mentioned various avenues, I think mentioning those again would be consumption of space.

With the world shrinking at a faster pace than ever, the importance of knowing a foreign languages is getting more and more obvious. However, for a specific job, APTITUDE is always essential. This is a sequal to selling objects, for which one has to sell his idea first. For that, one has to have attitude. I fully agree to Dr.Goutam Chatterjee, when he says that the person going in for learning a language should be a good linguist. Also, the person desirous of learning a foreign language should see at his own feedback. For insntance, when I started learning Arabic , not for a foreign assignemtn or a commercial advantage--just for kicks, I

Also, the person desirous of learning a foreign language should see at his own feedback. For insntance, when I started learning Arabic , not for a foreign assignemtn or a commercial advantage--just for kicks, I started noticing many points. The fitst one was--the word "filhaal" which we often use. ("filhaal toh main kuch naheen kar rahaa hoon"--"as of now I am not doing anything"). "Filhaal" is actually "Fe-al-haal""Fee" in Arabic means"Into", "Al" means "the", and "Haal" means "present". You can make out what "Filhaal" means, when we use it in hindi or urdu. And the word is derived from Arabic!!We have been using it for centuries together, without even knowing that. But this observation cannot be pinpointed by a person who is not a good linguist. So, it is always good to explore career avenues with foreign languages, BUT by those who have an APTITUDE for it.

Linguistic context is how meaning is understood without relying on intent and assumptions. One can check out his linguistic ability by analyzing how quickly he picks up phrases, meanings etc of his different language friends. Every one does not have this ability like every one can't be a good player, good musician, good program developer etc. Therefore, in nutshell, check own capability and adaptability first, then only choose this field.

Thanks for tagging aneeket! A very sharp discussion topic. Let me congratulate Aru first. Well, this is a topic which remind me of an article which mentioned an incident of a student(say X) who was among 18 students eligible for a post in a Japan based tech company. Clearing aptitude test at last 11 students made it to the final interview session. And that student (X) got the job just because he learnt german language when he was in 10th. Reason is simple more feasibility in international ventures and operations of the company. Many firms today have vacancies for the interpreters, recently a company got a sudden notice from the head office that chinese delegates are coming to visit the manufacturing plant. Chinese is known as the toughest language of all, an interpreter was then hired, who charged rs.2000 an hour. It clearly states that what does learning a foreign language mean! Moreover, in government and private colleges there's always a shortage of Foreign Language tutors. That's all from my side.
