I think it is a quite debatable topic. Students should KNOW what they enjoy and same should be KNOWN by the parents. To select a particular career or field, a collective effort by both parents and children is needed as said by pawan.

Children should decide their own career and parents should support them if they feel it right or else guide them to take the proper career. they should not force them to take up any carrer they like
