Career as Animal Trainer
Animal trainers train animals for specific tasks such as security, obedience, entertainment, racing or to assist the disabled. Animal trainers specialize in training one type of animal. Animals commonly trained are dogs, horses, elephant, cockatoos, seals, whales and dolphins as also tigers, bears and lions etc. The task of training follows the principle of reward and punishment.

Job Profile
- Assess the trainability of an animal, its temperament, ability and aptitude
- Familiarize the animal with human voice, touch or contact
- Train animals to follow their command
- Set the training goal
- Prepare a plan for training animals in specific skills
- Painstakingly using repetition and reward for training
- Undertake responsibility for the care of the animal such as feeding, exercising, grooming and general well being
- May direct animal shows in fun parks, circus etc.
- Rehearse the animals for shows, give cues during the performance and reward them during their act
- Security or search animal trainers work with the animal to achieve goals such as training police dogs, as watch or guide dogs
- Racehorse trainers are specialists. They coach jockeys to handle race horses during a race
