Career as Coast Guard

Rank structure and basic pay scales:

The existing rank structure, corresponding scales of pay and promotion prospects of Coast Guard officers are as follows:

Probation: 2 years or till completion of training whichever is later.

Other privileges - Officers in the Coast Guard, are given a number of additional facilities.

*Mechanical, Naval Architecture,Marine, Automotive, Mechatronics,Industrial, Production, Mettallurgy,Design, Aeronautical, Aerospace.
For Electrical branch Electrical/Electronics/Telecommunication/ Instrumentation/ Instrumentation and Control/ Electronics and Communication/Power Engg. or Power Electronics. 

**Selection

Selection to the various cadres of the Coast Guard are conducted every January and June for which the forms are filled six months in advance. Examinations are conducted in 2 phases:

Phase I - Preliminary selection board conducts objective tests in Mental Ability(MAT) & Picture Perception & Discussion. Graduate candidates selected should have passed XII with PCM. Girl candidates can join after graduation only (any subject).

Phase II - Those qualifying in Phase I go through a final selection through Group Discussion and interviews. This is followed by medical examinations. 

***Training General Duty Branch:  Training starts with Naval Orientation Course at INA, Ezhimala, Kerala for 22 weeks followed by deputation for afloat training for 24 weeks and 16 weeks of phase II afloat training on CG ships at various locations. They have to clear Seamanship Board exam after which they are deputed for technical courses at various training establishments for 43 weeks. Officers are posted onboard CG ships for 06 months for watch taking course.

General Duty (P/N) Branch :  Pilot Branch officers further after GD training and exam take Aviation Medicals at Delhi and are deputed for flying training to Air Force Academy /Civil Flying Academy for 06 months of phase I. Pilots are allocated to fixed or rotary wing branches and accordingly deputed to Coast Guard Flying Training Squadron, Daman / Helicopter Training School (HTS), Rajali respectively. On successful completion the officers are awarded with “Wings”.

Technical Branch : Technical Branch Officers on completion of Naval Orientation Course at INA, Ezhimala are deputed to INS Shivaji or INS Valsura for Engineering/ Electrical branches specialization course. The duration varies from 105-110 weeks of training & includes 24 weeks of Watch Keeping / Competency certificate training onboard a Coast Guard ship. On completion of this phase they are deputed for staff appointment. Selected technical officers are also deputed for Aviation Technical Courses as super-specialization after 4 Years of Service.

 Training for Short Service (Women) :  The short service women officers on completion of Naval Orientation Course at INA Ezhimala are deputed for various Technical courses at CG/Naval training establishments including 3 phases of on job training spread over a period of 70 weeks.  

Training for Short Service (CPL holders) :  The short service officers who are CPL holders on completion of Naval Orientation course at INA, Ezihmala are deputed for CG technical courses at CG Training establishment. Stream distribution  and CG Flying Training is for approximately 6 months duration.

**** Selection Sailors
Naviks Written test - Shortlisted candidates are called for selection tests/interview; candidates have the option of answering questions in English/Hindi. The test is a test of general mental ability followed by a test in English, Mathematics, General Sciences and General Knowledge. Candidates have to qualify in all the papers and in aggregate. Results are declared on the same day.
Yantriks (technical) are tested for knowledge in their discipline.

Interview/Physical fitness test
Successful candidates of the written exam are interviewed and tested for their physical efficiency. Qualifying in PFT is mandatory. Thereafter overall successful candidates have to undergo medical examination.

*****Training Sailors

Yantrik  :  Yantriks (Diploma Holders) are trained at INS Chilka for 9 weeks. Yantriks thereafter are deputed to CG ships for afloat training for 03 months followed by Technical training at INS Shivaji / INS Valsura/NIAT (Naval Institute of Aviation Technology) / Ship Wright School spanning 90-100 weeks depending upon the branch. 

Navik  (General Duty) :  Navik (GD) are trained at INS Chilka for 24 weeks. The GD Naviks post branch allocation at INS Chilka are deputed for afloat training for 3 months following by Cadre training. This training depends upon the cadre and varies from 4-6 months.

Navik (Domestic Branch) :  The Naviks (DB) undergo 15 weeks training at INS Chilka followed by 3 months afloat training and approximately 6 months branch training at INS Hamla at Mumbai.
