Career as Editor

Editors direct the policy of the publication, manage the staff and coordinate all the work. Editors are responsible for the content of their publication. They decide what will appeal to readers, assign topics and oversee the production of the newspaper. In very large newspapers there are associate or assistant editors who have responsibility for particular subjects, such as sports, international news, education, careers, family, etc. Administrative duties of editors includes hiring writers, planning budgets, negotiating contracts with freelance writers, etc.

  • Every newspaper or periodical whether in print, television or online format has an editor in overall charge and depending on its size, special editorial teams
  • Editor directs the policy of the publication
  • She/he manages the staff and coordinates all the work
  • Editors have regular meetings with their staff and writers which takes up considerable time
  • Establish priorities and follow deadlines
  • Oversee the work from ideation of stories/articles or preparation of outline of books to the final production

Employment Opportunities

Entry in the editorial section is generally at the sub-editorial level, or as trainee sub-editor or junior sub. The hierarchy thereafter is as follows: Assistant Sub Editor, Sub Editor, Assistant Editor, Associate Editor, and Editor.

Editors are appointed from amongst the ranks of correspondents, chief reporters and sub-editors. Some editors are recruited from among eminent persons who have been researchers and political or social analysts.
Courses in Journalism are offered in English, Hindi and regional languages.
