Career as Environmentalist

Environmental Scientists

  • Manage treatment of waste from industries, municipalities, refineries, distilleries, mines, fertilizer plants, food processing and textiles industries. Toxic wastes hazardous to the environment are detected and treated by microbes
  • Chemists, engineers, hydrologists, geologists, radioactive waste experts and industrial waste managers are responsible for cutting down the dangers from solid wastes
  • Work in air pollution management i.e. Acid rain, ozone depletion, greenhouse gases which are threats to the environment. Analytical chemists, toxicologists and air quality specialists analyze the effects of harmful gases emitted from fuel or garbage combustion.
  • Water quality management is taken care by botanists, oceanographers, marine scientists, wildlife scientists, ecologist who work for the preservation, purification and advising on the quality of water in rivers, lakes, streams, and all surface and ground waters
  • Land conservationists are involved in planning better use of land and water. Conservation of parks, outdoor recreation sites, re-greening of urban areas needs professionals from a background of geology, landscape architecture, wildlife management, forestry etc.

Environmental Planners

  • Plan the preservation of natural habitats, transport systems, urban expansions and oversee  implementation of the master plan.

Environmental Engineers

  • Design, construct, and maintain systems to control waste streams produced in urban and rural areas or by the industries
  • Develop strategies for protecting areas under environmental threat and impose regulations for the protection of the environment
  • Manage water and land resources i.e deal with public health, terrain and water management
  • Manage air pollution by dealing with air quality management
  • Manage collection and disposal of hazardous waste

Environmental education and communication

  • Conduct college/ school awareness programs
  • Coordinate community awareness programs
  • Work as guides for wildlife parks and sanctuaries
  • Work in public communication

ECO Tourism involves

  • Spreading awareness about the flora and fauna in different parts of the country
  • Propagation of  tourism linking it to  environment protection
  • Study and talk on tribal cultures, folk art forms, artifacts, temples, forest wealth.
  • Archaeological restoration

Environment Journalism involves

  • Reporting environmental issues such as nuclear tests, construction of dams etc,
  • Making of documentaries concerning the environment
  • Production of films on environmental issues
