Currently, I am doing B.Tech (4th semester) in mechanical engineering. Is this the right time to initiate preparation for MS abroad?

Yes, preparation for MS would be better if you have started from 5th semester onwards. So it's high time to prepare.

Hi Anand, To be honest, there is no right or wrong time. If you have made your mind that you will pursue your further studies from abroad, then you need to start with your homework that is country selection (which country you want to go and why? ), what course to pursue and from which university. As you are pursuing Mechanical and assuming that you will be interested in pursuing your MS in a similar or allied field, you need to list down the courses the university offers. Prepare a check list of such courses and universities. Next should be your research for the below:
-What are the job opportunities available in the country after completion
-Is the degree valid and recognised outside that country
-What are the exams that I need to give. For how long these exam scores will be valid
-What is the fee for the course
-What will be the accommodation charges
-Are students allowed to take any part time work while studying. If yes, then how many hours. Etc. As you are a mechanical aspirant, I would like to say that Germany is very much known for its technological advancements especially in the field of Mechanical and automobile. Few good universities that you can look for are Hochschule Albstadt-Sigmaringen, RWTH Aachen University, Esslingen University of Applied Sciences, University of Applied Sciences Ingolstadt / University of Applied Sciences Landshut, etc. The cost would be less as education in Germany is government. Funded and as a result you have to pay a very nominal fee. For admission you might have to give GRE and IELTS / TOEFL. If possible go for a German language course as it will help you find a part time job. A student in Germany can work 90 full days or 180 half days. Also after completion of the course, you can look for employment and if you get one then you can convert your 'students permit' to 'residence permit for gainful employment'. Hello, whether it's Automobile or any other branch, duration for Diploma is three years after 10th board. However as per National Education Policy, once a student gets admission, after 12th board, once the students complete two years, they will be entitled to receive diploma.
