Hello Vivek, Being a commerce student would not be a black mark that would prevent you from ever becoming a game designer. Yet neither would a degree in commerce be a big help in becoming a game designer. Ideally, game designers need to know a little bit about everything: programming, maths, physics, creative writing, technical writing, art, music, history, literature, economics and statistics. You name it. Most of all, game designers need to understand how to create a game concept that excites people enough to get the project funded; develop the concept into a comprehensive design, including the game's goals, challenges, resources, procedures, rules, levels, content and story (if there is one); communicate that design to the development team (assuming the game is a video game) so that they know what tasks to do; and balance the gameplay so that it is fun to play. Some game designers earn game design or production degrees to learn how to do that; others learn how to do it on their own.

Yes, game designers can come from many fields. I've known game designers who studied programming, physics, art, history, film or philosophy in college. Being a commerce student would not be a black mark that would prevent you from ever becoming a game designer. Yet neither would a degree in commerce be a big help in becoming a game designer. Ideally, game designers need to know a little bit about everything: programming, math, physics, creative writing, technical writing, art, music, history, literature, economics, statistics. You name it. Most of all, game designers need to understand how to create a game concept that excites people enough to get the project funded; develop the concept into a comprehensive design, including the game's goals, challenges, resources, procedures, rules, levels, content and story (if there is one); communicate that design to the development team (assuming the game is a video game) so that they know what tasks to do; and balance the gameplay so that it is fun to play. Some game designers earn game design or production degrees to learn how to do that; others learn how to do it on their own. However, one doesn't get a job as a game designer until they can prove they have the skills to be one by having a portfolio of work to show off.
