Yes, Stephen Hawking (an English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and author) attended the University of Cambridge and is one of the most celebrated alumni of the instution. At Cambridge, he pursued a PhD in Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, specialising in General Relativity and Cosmology. He was the director of research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at the University of Cambridge.
