DMLT professionals generally work away from patients in a laboratory where they process samples like blood, urine, and tissue samples. Patient interactions are limited in a DMLT role.

Some DMLT professionals will work in a health-care setting and will at times work directly with patients to collect samples or discuss tests that are being done.  Most DMLT work involves laboratory based work with lab equipment, providing lab reports with the results of tests done, and aiding physicians and nurse practitioners with their patient's diagnosis.
