Most of the software developers are engineers from different engineering branches! Salary is decided by the job content and the organisation hiring you. There is a huge gap in salaries between Cisco/ Microsoft or Infy/ TCS.

First software developer is also a engineer so it is wrong to ask this question, but at this time as technology grown IT companies gives higher packages than any other engineering field.

Software Developers are also Engineers and generally have Computer Science or IT as their field of study. A Software Developer generally has higher job possibilities than any other field of Engineering as now everything is tech handy So, they are generally offered higher packages compared to other Engineers. But rest all depends on the job profile, quality of education and skills of the person applying.
