Does it make more sense to go for a general MBA or an MBA with a specialization?

Specialized MBA makes your preference strong for a specific field which means you will be preferred first, where as a normal MBA would make you eligible for all the streams but without any specific scale.

Always specialization in MBA matters a lot. General MBA is all about studying all aspects of management education which include Human resource, finance, operation, marketing etc.Most of the companies require students based on specialization.Some universities like Bangalore University, MG university etc offer dual specialization.The openings for general MBA graduates are very less as compared to MBA graduates with specialization.Companies choose aspirants based on the vacancies in their firm.So there comes less opportunity for the general MBA students. Last year was a year for marketing students.Major multinational companies look for students with particular skills rather than general skills they possess.General MBA graduates will learn about all the specialization but they won't have a deep knowledge about what a company requires. So specialization in MBA matters more than general MBA graduates.

MBA with specialization gives a field of expertise were any individual can learn things on the field of their interest and be a master of that field and it also helps to know that field in a better way with larger exposure.

Doing MBA with a specialization makes more sense than doing general MBA. As, nowadays, the corporate sector is looking for aspirants who are experts and specialized in some field during their course of study as it would help the corporate to spend less amount on a candidate for training him. While doing a general MBA, the candidate can get a job but the package compared with a person having a specialization would be less. Nowadays, dual specialization is getting a boost so doing a general MBA now would be a loss for anyone. The benefit of doing specialization is that it gives you in-depth knowledge of the subject which you have taken as your specialization. This specialization will help you to get a job as well as an internship in that field so that your knowledge increases.

Specialized MBA programs are meant to provide a direction to your career. These programs provide you with a focused career. It provides the right launch to your career. Specialist MBA is specially preferred in fields like retail, infrastructure, banking, finance insurance, etc. While General Management makes you jack of all, specialized MBA makes you master of one. General MBA and specialized MBA have their own strengths and weaknesses: Strengths of general MBA: - The General MBA Program provides holistic learning. - It allows you to learn all the nitty-gritties of management. - It will surely ensure a wider knowledge base and you can shift to other sectors. Weaknesses of general MBA: - You don’t have in-depth knowledge of any sector. - When you begin your career, you don’t have a specialized area to join. Strengths of Specialized MBA - Specialized MBA provides you with in depth knowledge about your field. - You are prepared to face a particular market. - You are not confused regarding your career as you have a focused career path. Weaknesses of Specialized MBA - Your knowledge is limited to only your area of study. - You don’t have many options in terms of pursuing a career. In case you opt for a wrong specialization then it will hamper your entire career unlike general MBA. Thus, deciding whether to go for specialized or general MBA depends on your career goals. After finishing the first-year core foundational courses, MBA programs with concentrations permit second-year students to concentrate their elective coursework in a specific business discipline. Students completing 3-4 courses in a single discipline receive a degree noting their area of concentration. Specialized programs offer in-depth development and knowledge for someone who is confined to a particular industry or specialty during their career. The commonly available specializations are- Entrepreneurship, finance, marketing, accounting and management. The traditional MBA provides a broad skill set that prepares business professionals for success in any industry or job function at any time in their career. The obvious drawback of a general MBA is that while you'll acquire a wider knowledge base, you may not have the depth required for a particular position. If you are looking to combine the best of both options, consider a general MBA with elective tracks offering certifications or a curriculum style that meet your needs. So, I think a general MBA is better if you are a good candidate, there are wide opportunities.

Sector specific MBA grads may face challenges in career growth with changes in trends and geo political impact on the chosen sector. One must chose MBA specialization based on his or her interests, educational background, prior job experience and personality, skills and competencies. Generic MBA grads have wider career options in comparison to MBA with functional specialization or sector specific MBA. Unless a students is clear about his functional or sector choice, Generic MBA is a better career option.
