Does one have to do political science to get into politics?

It is not mandatory to have formal Political Science educational qualifications to become a politician. If we study history and current state of Indian Political System, we will find that Indian Political System draws people from different walk of life into system. Majority of Indian Politicians are from legal profession or people with Social work inclination. However, most of the top politicians have good understanding of Political Science and Public administration which they learn in field under their mentors or political parties or by self-learning. Therefore, to succeed as Politician you require good understanding of Political Science and Systems which can be learned by formal or informal education.

Yes, political science as majors is most favored choice to get into politics, but there are other degree majors which can give an entry too, as mentioned below: 1. International relations 2. Economics 3. Law 4. History A politician can also be civil servant, or any chartered accountant. Hence, one can take up civil services exams like UPSC exams to firstly become IAS/ IFS / IRS Officers which can then land you cabinet position and also entry into Politics. Various chief ministers and Nobel Prize winners have been Civil servants and have served the nation before joining Politics as career. There are many dubious ways with strong political connection where one can directly get into politics, but such ways are not suggested and neither recommended. It is sheer hard work and passion to serve nations' problems which will steer the career into politics.

Hi, It's just like asking "Does one have to learn swimming to become a swimmer?". If you want to get into politics either in Delhi University's DUSU or at state level, then you need to know the history of politics of that particular sector. You need to know different ideologies. For ex. A.B.V.P of DUSU follows ideology of Swami Vivekananda If you want to join ABVP, then you need to know the ideology of Swami Vivekananda. Politics is not just white shirts and big cars. Think of politics as an activity for the welfare of the society and well being of the citizens. You need to study all these things and political science course enlightens you with these ideas. Political science teaches you how to think. Its not a rulebook for politics which contains tactics on how to win the elections. If you want to make a change, you need to study the history to change the future and political science teaches you the history of politics in India and in different states. So, yes, it is important to study political science if you want to get into politics.
