Does your performance in terms of marks or CGPA in B.Tech matter if you want to pursue MS abroad?

The selection of a candidate for MS program is a 2 stage process in abroad: Selection process goes something like this there is a list of cutoffs for a threshold values for certain selection criteria for example all the students with GRE above 310 will be cleared or All students at CGPA above 8 out of 10 will be selected, etc. This limit is not very strict and flexible there is also criteria of English proficiency test. In this process you will be just on your GPA GRE score letter of recommendation and sop, etc. And is highly flexible. Student with great academic but not so good GRE marks can be selected over a student with perfect GRE score and average Academy. So as you can see in both of the process there is always more weightage given to to your GPA than any other factor the weightage of the factors is given below: Usually the selection criterion goes like this (in descending order): *Academic GPA/CGPA/%age as well as ranking in your batch *Undergrad university *SOP *Research ex/Work ex *GRE *LOR These other factors will vary from case to case: *Final Year Project *Internship and papers *Co/Extra-curricular *Prof Letting I would suggest you that GPA is the most important thing for the selection of a student for MS programs in abroad. If you don’t do well in your studies, you can prepare well for your GRE exam to get good GRE score. Relatively high GRE score balances you average school performance and increase your chances to get into good grad school. Also, In addition to your academic record and a good GRE scores, letters of recommendations from your seniors or supervisors from your workplace or educational institute play a huge role in balancing the selection in your favor. These criteria matters a lot for your chances to get into good B-School. Make sure you aim for good GRE score if your CGPA scores are average. Both matter actually. But people with low GRE can appear for the test again and get a high score on subsequent attempts, but you can do nothing about the GPA. It is what it is, can't change it. All these factors matter: GPA + GRE + Profile research, work experience, etc. + LOR (Recommendations) + SOP (Personal statements). You can do something about all of the above expect the GPA. So, it matters, a lot. But not if you overshadow your GPA with awesome other factors.

The exams taken for admissions for MS abroad like GRE/TOFEL/IELTS are only a test for your reasoning and english skills so graduation CGPA is what reflects your potential in academics. I can't emphasize enough, the importance of CGPA in graduate level for MS abroad. It might be a factor that can give you an upper hand against all the applicants or let you down.It is one of the crucial factors with others like LORs, SOPs, GRE/TOFEL score, and recommendations. Unless you have good publications or recommendations from very good individuals CGPA is one thing that can't be negotiated. CGPA in US universities is on a 4 Point scale and conversion is not an as simple unitary method. They have their own conversion techniques. WES is one of them that does this stuff for you, but again it is not necessary, People might say, a good GRE score will compensate for low CGPA, but it doesn't. Top tier universities demand 3.5 or plus CGPA that roughly is 9 CGPA according to Indian scales. What also matters is the consistency in your grades. If you started as bad but eventually have an increasing graph, you can explain that in SOP. In some universities what also matters is the Graduate score in the courses that relevant with the area you are opting for your masters. Sometimes guys with decent CGPA but lacking score in relevant subjects gets rejected. It also depends upon the field you are opting for. Mechanical guys face a cutthroat competition. I just can't stress enough on the importance of CGPA but can say. Keep it as high as possible. A good CGPA definitely increases your chances to be admitted to good universities. Hope that helps.
