Apparel production comes in many forms, including dressmaking, pattern creation and sewing. Many apparel producers also design their clothes using computer aided design (CAD) technology. There are always going to be openings within the fashion industry for creative individuals who create wonderful pieces of clothes. Apparel design is a generic term indicating a series of steps necessary to develop a new apparel product. These steps can be: ideas and concept generation, concept screening (feasibility, acceptability,.., for each function), preliminary design, evaluation, prototyping and final design. The product in the apparel industry usually can be either a fashion product or a basic product (actually there could be a wider classification, depends of the kind of markets). So when you talk about fashion design, you talk about activities already included into the main term of apparel design, that are related to a particular kind of product (with shorter life cycle time, less predictability, etc.)
