What is the difference between IAS and IIS in terms of power and cadre?Is the salary structure and promotion pattern same for both?

Hi, the IAS or the Indian Administrative Service is definitely the most prestigious of all, it handles all affairs of the government. At the central level, this involves the framing and implementation of policy. At the district level, it is concerned with district affairs, including development functions. At the divisional level, the IAS officers look after law and order, general administration and development work. Members of the Indian Administrative Service hold various administrative posts like District Collector, Heads of Departments, Heads of Public Enterprises at the state level etc. They can also be posted on deputation to the Central Government to various posts. The officers of Indian Information Services (IIS) on the other hand are controlled by the Ministry of Defence (Directorate of Public Relations). IIS officers handle dissemination of information on government policies, programmes and activities through print, electronic, audio and visual media. Providing feedback on the reactions of people to the programmes and policies and of advising the government on its information policy are the jobs. The work is interesting as it uses the flare for journalism, public relations and administration all together. There is a special requirement to enter this service. The officer needs to have some previous experience of work in a newspaper or news agency or ad agency. The promotional channel is more or less the same as that of the IAS. An IIS officer at the Higher administrative grade ie: at the designation of Director General / Principal Information Officer gets a fixed payscale of Rs. 26000, whereas the IAS officer gets a fixed payscale of Rs. 26000 for a designation in State Government and Rs. 30000 for a designation in Government of India.
