Probably, these lines as quoted from wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_engineering_branches) will give a better picture for all those who don't know what core engineering branches are:

Core Branch is a term used for the basic engineering branches and hence the others were derived from them according to demand in market considering every sector.
For example you can call Electronics, Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical as some of the core branches.
And branches like IT, Electronics & Electrical Engineering (EEE), E & I, etc can be called as derived ones.
