Manoj, Is it pai or pi? I think it is pi = 22/7 = 3.1416.pi is a mathematical constant whose value is the ratio of any circle's circumference to its diameter in the Euclidean plane; this is the same value as the ratio of a circle's area to the square of its radius. It is approximately equal to 3.14159265 in the usual decimal notation. Many formulae from mathematics, science, and engineering involve pi, which makes it an important mathematical constant.

It was tested for many circles and found that the ratio of the circumference to diameter is always same for any circle. It was equal to 22/7. Gave a notation PAI and now it is being used to simplify things involved with circles.

The value of 22/7 was given even before the world knew what it is . Aryabhtta, famous mathematician, astronomer and physicist gave this value in his book Aryabhattiya.
Aryabhata worked on the approximation for pi (), and concluded that is irrational. In the second part of the Aryabhatiyam (gaitapda 10), he writes:
caturadhikam atamaaguam dvaistath sahasrmayutadvayavikambhasysanno vttapariha."Add four to 100, multiply by eight, and then add 62,000. By this rule the circumference of a circle with a diameter of 20,000 can be approached."[10]
This implies that the ratio of the circumference to the diameter is ((4 + 100) 8 + 62000)/20000
