The phenomenal growth in the IT industry in the last decade, especially in India, fueled the entrance of MBA into this domain. Management professionals who hitherto used to look at IT as a "support" function and restrict themselves to the so called core fields of Marketing and Finance were jumping over each other to enter a field which was growing at a rate absurdly higher than traditional industries. The concept of the "MBA in Systems / Information Technology" was born. An industry which was the domain of hardnosed scientists / engineers was soon flooded with professionals armed with management degrees and talking all about "going up the value chain", CRM, knowledge management and what not. The real problem arises in integrating a project team containing both engineers and MBAs and at the same time keeping everyone motivated to do what they know best. Their entry was however questioned as to what inputs they could give to an industry which was so technology-driven, and what an MBA whose formal training provided him so little specific technical inputs could do to further the goals of a organization pursuing an IT/Systems function.
