GMAT has always been the preferred exam for aspiring MBA candidates. I believe GRE is suitable for those students who are confused between 2 different streams. Taking the GRE would solve the purpose for both. For Example: If a student is confused between Engineering and MBA or Engineering and Business Analytics, it is always recommended to take the GRE as it is accepted by allthe programs. The student can make up his/her mind while preparing for the test as well as target both the programs and finally take up 1 offer. If the same students takes the GMAT, he will not be able to target all of them.

Both are different tests. The syllabus also differs completely. Many students take the GRE as they find GMAT tougher than the GRE. GRE supposedly have easier vocabulary and mathematics section. GRE scores are now widely accepted by business schools so it can be taken. But if we see admission trends GMAT seems to have a better standing when it comes to MBA as it tests only a particular skill set.

More than 1200 business schools now accepts GRE scores for admissions into the MBA programs however I believe GMAT test takers have an upper hand. GRE scores are mostly converted to the GMAT equivalent before admissions and because GMAT was mainly developed for business schools the test gives a better output. GRE is mainly for admissions into MS and Ph.D programs.
