The Department of aerospace engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM) was founded in 1969. Since then it has been at the forefront of fundamental and applied research & development with scientific and social influence in the country. The department has been committed in activities supporting our national ambitions in the field of aerospace engineering. Continued interaction with R&D agencies of the international name in the field of aerospace engineering has led to mutually beneficial research projects. The faculty and the facilities are good. There are job opportunities after graduating, the college calls many companies for the placements. Aerospace engineering is not a core branch so you can't expect very high paying jobs or placements equal to the core branches. But they are satisfying. If you are getting aerospace engineering in IIT-Kanpur, then I would suggest you join it as they are more focused towards the discipline. Talking about the stats, there is not much official information but around 71% students get placed each year.

IIT Kanpur is one of the well reputed institutions in India and one of the old IITs. So it attracts lots of good companies for placements and the statistics are pretty good as such. For 2016, for Aerospace, 19 students registered for placements out of which 15 were placed (BE). The percentage of students placed was 78.94 percent as such. The packages offered for Aerospace students were in the range between 5 LPA to 16.5 LPA. The average package was between 6 - 7 LPA (approx). Many students also opted for roles in Management, Finance and Consulting. If you see the placement report, you will find many banks including Credit Suisse, Citicorp, Goldman Sachs, Axis, PwC etc. Apart from these companies like Airbus India, Eaton, Ge India Technology Center, Honeywell technologies recruited. So, the overall scenario looks good for IIT Kharagpur Aerospace placements. Aerospace here has nearly 50+ members and there is a huge competition in them for branch change. However, if you are particular with the field then, it is more advisable to opt of IIT, Kanpur(the reason being that they have much better faculty, their own air strip and best laboratories in India. The placements from aerospace engineering are exceptional when it is compared to all other colleges of India. The southern part of India has more scope due to the largest industrial and aeronautical friendly environment. For placements, various multinational and renowned aerospace global and national corporates visit every year.Though the scope is very large, still the branch is struggling to find its place and trying to level upto branches like CSE, ECE and IT. When it comes to static, the placements vary from Rs 40 lakhs to Rs 12 lakhs per annum. The future of the aeronautical engineering finds a large scope in countries like Germany and France and now slowly in India too. Most of the students chose to go for further higher studies abroad but when it comes to aerospace in India, the four most prestigious institutes are IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Mumbai, IST Kerela. Other than the job , one can also find its way to government jobs in ISRO or any research organization. Hope it helps.
