How are the placements of B.Tech in Materials Science and Engineering from IIT, Kanpur?

Hello, Materials science is a fascinating field which has no end because of the variety of problems that keep on coming, but there are various challenges that you might face. Materials science requires a good understanding of the concepts of all fields of science. This causes it to face a tough challenge from people of core physics, chemistry or engineering background. It is difficult to master everything as you can understand. For the same reason, many companies, which require material engineers equally, may sometimes prefer a person from a core engineering background. Very few people ever go into the core in metallurgy. Disappointing, but it is the harsh truth. Reason: Core doesn't pay very well initially. No one cares to look at the growth over a longer period of time. Many find other interests in non-core jobs, such as banking, finance, consultancy, software, etc. In the case of IIT-Kanpur, students who appear for the placement process in IIT-Kanpur get placed with an average placement of 6-7 LPA (it's pretty good), and 8-9 LPA for Integrated Dual Degree (IDD B.Tech and M.Tech) graduates. Main recruiters are Tata Steel, DRDO and other core companies. As far as the further opportunities are concerned, there is a lot of scope in this field, may be less in India, but a lot abroad. The placement trend in B.Tech in materials science and engineering in IIT-Kanpur is clean and amazing. Though, Materials Science and Engineering is not one of the core branches but day by day more companies are opening their gates for the people. They are the industry people anyway. To give an idea about the present condition, here are a few names which recruit students of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from IIT, Kharagpur-American Express India Pvt. Ltd., Applied Materials Pvt. Ltd, Magma Fincorp Ltd., Avanti Fellows (Curriculum Associate profile), O P Jindal Institute of Technology, Bankbazaar, Bhushan Steel Ltd., Bosch, India Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technology and Reliance Industries Ltd. Apart from the industry companies such as Bosch, Bhushan Steel, etc., there are colleges also who look for the best engineers from IIT-Kharagpur. Around 74% people get placed, with an average salary package of 11 lakhs per annum. The highest package goes about 20-24 LPA.
