How are the placements of B.Tech in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from IIT, Roorkee?

Placement are fantastic from IITs. You can take any branch but it also depends on the candidate’s potential to grasp them at their best. The best companies visit the campus for interview and shortlist the candidate as per the company standards. Brands like Adani, Birla group, Reliance, ONGC and other companies come for placements. Students from the batch of metallurgical engineering like Jindal Powers and other companies offer an average of 25 lakhs to the candidates. Overall career development is done. Reliance Power, ONGC, Jindal, Adani, Birla, NTPC, etc. are major recruiting agencies for the metallurgical branch. Rest, there are automotive companies visiting. Maruti, TATA, Mahindra, etc. for their graduate engineer Trainee from these premier institutions. I hope this will clear all the doubts about the premium institution. There are so many questions about placements. When a candidate is looking for college options to get admission, there are several things he/she is concerned about. Be it academics, faculty, college life or the placements, everything is important. When talking about the IITs, they cover most of them for you. Placements are generally very good from IITs but let's have a look at the question. If you are aware of the news, IIT-Roorkee not only has decent placements, there were record-breaking pre-placements offers in that college. Placements are best for Computer Science, Electronics and IT branches and good for Electrical, Civil, Mechanical and other branches. Around 26.53% Metallurgy students got placed in core companies. If you are okay with non-core and software jobs, let me tell you, 32.65% got placed in software companies. The rest 40.82% chose to go with consulting and analytics field. Out of 57 students who sat for the interview, 53 got the job. These stats are of the academic session 2016-17. With this, you can get an idea how the college is in terms of placements.

IIT-Roorkee is known widely for metallurgy and materials engineering, The placement season, for both internship and final placements, usually opens in August / September, where the companies and the institute get in touch and eventually schedule a date for placements in the coming months. The overall average salary for metallurgy is 7.5 LPA and the highest is 21 LPA which is phenomenal as compares to ISM Dhanbad. Overall great dedicated support in bringing topnotch mining giants like Vedanta Resources Plc, Cairn India, Essel Mining, Hindalco, Shell, Schlumberger, Wells Fargo. Even Rio Tinto came to campus but did not recruit more than 2 students, for international roles in Asia Pacific and Europe regions. Such is the level where you get maximum exposure to state of art facilities and amazing faculties insights and industry experience from them eventually helping out in placements season to hold an edge over other college students making it the best colleges in India after ISM-Dhanbad for metallurgy branch of specialisation.

Scenario of placement in IIT Roorkee for metallurgical and materials engineering is just ok, meaning that it is not too bad, neither too good. There are some government organisations like DRDO, DRDL private companies like Shell, Liners India, Tata Steel, Reliance, etc. offering various opportunities and jobs for students pursuing metallurgical and materials, offering you nothing less than 8-9 lacs on an average, while the highest being that of 35 lacs for IIT Roorkee. Of course, the situations student has to give up its hopes of getting into Core Company, but that is just because they were never really interested in the sector in the first place and wanted to pursue the same just to study at NIT or IIT. If you think of doing your Masters in the same, you would double up your chances of getting into a core metallurgical company, and if the institute happens to be overseas, more number of opportunities await for you to grab it. IIT-Roorkee is one of the old IITs and one of the well-reputed institutes in India, so you don't have to worry about placements. Let's go through its placement report of 2016-17 for metallurgical and materials engineering. The total percentage of placed students from MME is around 53% (this is low because the calculations also included the people who opted out of placements for higher studies or some other reasons. If we neglect those students it will be above 80%). Going forward, around 26.5% of the placed students got into core jobs which is a really good metric. Around 32% got into IT jobs while around 40% got into consulting/finance jobs. The average CTC for metallurgical and materials engineering was around 7.8 LPA which again is a good metric. So, the placement scenario looks good for MME in IIT-Roorkee as such. But again, don't join any branch or college just because of its placements. Try to find what you are passionate about and pursue that branch.
