How can I become a good software engineer?

It depends on what kind of job role you want to take up. There are plenty of branches/aspects of a software engineering role in Information Technology industry. Most importantly try to find which aspect you like the most. Generally, most of the times this remains undecided. If you want to take up hardcore Coding/Development related job, my suggestion is to pick up a programming language and fall in love with. Start practicing problems with minimal difficulty level to tough ones. Easier ones can be easily found on the internet. The tougher ones however, needs certain level of deeper searches. Try to take part in coding competitions. Sphere Online Judge (SPOJ) is a great place with Coding and algorithm problems with varying difficulty levels. Once you have certain level of understanding in coding, algorithms and data structure, you can start taking part in coding challenges like HackerRank, Codeforces, HackerEarth - Programming challenges and Developer jobs, Topcoder is repeatable, on-demand crowdsourcing, done right, at scale. There are other types of Jobs related to Software Engineering as well. Like becoming a DBA (Database Administrator), or a BA (Business Analyst). For becoming a DBA, you need to have strong skills in DBMS technology. For becoming a Business Analyst, you need to know the in-and-out functionality of a certain Domain like, Finance, Telecom, etc. There are plenty of more roles as a Software Engineer these days like being a Data Scientist and so on. Most of these need strong coding skills to excel. Overall, you need to get your basics strong on every Subject Matter of Software Engineering and then focus on a very particular aspect that you like. There are plenty of open source materials available over the internet. You just need to have the will to learn. A simple Google Search of what you like will bring out all the things you need to know about that topic.
